He served as a military doctor in the Second Anglo-Afghan War and was wounded at the Battle of Maiwand. After returning home, he met Sherlock Holmes through a friend's introduction and began living together at 221B Baker Street. Thereafter, he worked as Holmes's partner and biographer, solving many difficult cases together.
