Rapid evolution occurred due to drastic environmental changes from the excavation for Tokyo Bay subsea tunnel construction. After growth through multiple stages of form changes, it awakened as a powerful kaiju with a colony structure. Ultimately becoming Godzilla's nemesis in death, it played a major role in the conclusion of the Heisei VS series.
