- Betty Kane appeared as the first Batgirl in Batman #139 in 1961, later replaced by Barbara Gordon. Barbara is the daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon and made her official debut in Detective Comics #359 in 1967. After a long period of activity as Batgirl, she was paralyzed from the waist down due to Joker's attack and became active as the information warfare expert Oracle. In the 2000s, Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown also took the name Batgirl and were featured prominently in many stories. With The New 52 and DC Rebirth, Barbara Gordon returned as Batgirl once again.
